Your Role With Us:
- Performs responsibilities of a staff technologist, setting high standards of performance.
- All accreditation, licensing and compliance standards are implemented and consistently followed/monitored, maintaining survey readiness state.
- Assists in setting, completion and monitoring of section goals, objectives & performance improvement indicators, including producing regular reports as required. Develops and promotes innovative ideas to improve department.
- Responsible for maintaining/developing technical procedures and policies required for performing tests with lab section. Policy and procedure manuals are up-to-date, meet accreditation standards and needs of all personnel who work in the area. All aspects of testing from receipt of specimens to communication of results are addressed. Patient preparation, specimen collection and handling information are current and accurate.
- Based upon the goals of the department, provides effective new employee training program and ongoing continuing educational needs are met in area. Develops & implements pertinent & effective annual competency activities.
- Develops the Quality control/quality assurance program within area. Ensures the program is appropriate, thorough, well documented and consistently followed.
- Assists with the prioritization and performance of the daily workload within the section. Some supervision may be exercised over staff in providing technical expertise and guidance in area of specialization. Position may assist with staffing and scheduling as requested by manager. May be called upon to provide feedback on staff technical performance.
- Equipment and instrumentation is maintained appropriately. Reviews and maintains records of instrument maintenance and repair and provides timely notification in case of instrument malfunction.
- Works effectively with medical director, manager, supervisors and staff to share information and foster high levels of staff involvement and decision making.
- Conducts research on emerging trends, assists with cost-benefit analysis and recommends changes that would enhance lab service.
- Participates in very active role for new or replacement equipment, instrumentation or reagents/supplies. Evaluates technical aspects thoroughly between various vendors/options. Leads/facilitates implementation processes.
- Minimizes operating expenses; maintains appropriate inventory and utilization with documentation. Controls inventory in an effective manner avoiding unnecessary late orders or shortages. Works effectively with purchasing and Laboratory Operations Specialist II on inventory issues.
- Maintains thorough working knowledge of Laboratory Information system and uses system efficiently and effectively, including interfaces with instrumentation and middleware where applicable. Understands processes between Hospital Information system and LIS as pertains to area. Ensures appropriate downtime procedures and related materials are current and complete for area.

Background/Expertise:
- Bachelor of Science Degree required. If Bachelor’s is not in a science field, sufficient course work in the sciences is required to meet CLIA requirements for highly complex testing.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS; ASCP/AMT) license required.
- Obtain a minimum of 8 CEU's annually.
- Must have a minimum of four (4) years of recent related work experience in laboratory area of comparable complexity and services, exhibiting extensive and current knowledge of lab discipline.
- Experience with a Laboratory Information System required.
- Experience in team process and problem solving highly desirable.
- Effective communication with all members of the health care team is essential.
- Must possess strong project management skills.
- Ability to analyze current methods and processes, look for improvements and develop reports/recommendations.
- Ability to perform analyses of specimens, detect and investigate problems, make evaluations supported by scientific evidence, ability to provide technical consultation to physicians, nurses and others in area of specialization.
- Requires demonstrated ability for technical development & ongoing maintenance of procedures, assays and instrumentation in area.
- Thorough and current knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, instrumentation and safety precautions in the field of specialization required.
- Ability to implement Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards, Performance Improvement activities and all regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Demonstrated ability to provide orientation and training programs to new and current team members.
- Specialist or additional certification in laboratory discipline very desirable.
