Our history
Salem Health’s journey began in 1896 with an investment of $752 to turn the former Oregon School for the Blind into a five-bed hospital. Through a century and a quarter of competition, mergers, floods, pandemics, wars, depressions, the creation of private health insurance, Medicare, vaccines, vitamins and technology, we’ve remained focused on our mission — to improve the health and well-being of the people and community we serve.
Salem Health today
As the trusted source for high-quality, compassionate care for Oregon’s Mid-Willamette Valley, Salem Health is a community-based, not-for-profit institution operating two hospitals and multiple clinics. We’re one of Oregon’s largest acute care hospitals and operate the busiest emergency department on the West Coast. We’re also Salem’s largest private employer, with more than 5,000 employees. There are more than 800 providers on our medical staff with about 350 people serving as volunteers in non-medical support roles.
