Your role with us

As an assistant nurse manager in our gynecologic oncology department, you'll play a key role in leading and supporting our team of nurses to deliver exceptional, patient-centered care to individuals with gynecologic cancer diagnoses. You'll work closely with the nurse manager to promote a culture of excellence, foster professional growth and development, and drive initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. By championing evidence-based best practices, driving quality improvement initiatives, and ensuring seamless patient flow, you'll leverage your clinical expertise and leadership skills to facilitate effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving among interdisciplinary teams. You'll also prioritize staff development, accountability, and recognition, while ensuring a safe and efficient work environment that supports the delivery of high-quality care to our patients and families.

What you'll do

  • Supervises and manages a team of registered nurses, medical assistants, intake coordinators, oncology assistants, and referral specialists.
  • Commits to ongoing learning and evidence-based best practices, attends and participates in unit meetings, and presents or leads some elements of staff meetings; understands and communicates organizational goals and strategic plans to staff and maintains current communication; participates in division or hospital committees and projects, supervises the unit in the nurse manager's absence, and promotes ethical decision-making. 
  • Promotes and ensures customer service standards are met and exceeded, performs daily rounding with patients, and promotes family-centered care; ensures service recovery and patient follow-up, promotes physician greeting and check-in, and manages up unit staff and other departments to patients and families; verifies continuous improvement in patient satisfaction scores. 
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of policies and procedures, schedules timely and thorough follow-up for patient safety alerts, and promotes quality projects; actively involved with high-risk patient issues and plan of care, completes audits, ensures staff follow-up and compliance, and verifies unit compliance with national patient safety goals and core measures. 
  • Performs daily rounding on staff, promotes and participates in shared decision-making, and participates in positive reinforcement and staff recognition; actively participates in performance management of staff, holds staff accountable to high standards of patient care and professional conduct, and promotes education and certification; completes timely and meaningful staff performance appraisals and assists with interviews, new employee onboarding, and other projects. 
  • Schedules staff balanced for competency and numbers, maintains productivity in alignment with budget, accounts for unit overtime, and manages patient volume; audits timecards for accuracy and timeliness, tracks staff absenteeism, and oversees the charge capture review program. 
  • Reports and follows up on identified safety issues, performs unit safety checks, ensures hallways are clear, and maintains availability of equipment and supplies; works collaboratively with charge nurses and staff to facilitate breaks and lunches.

Required qualifications

  • A bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or a bachelor's degree in a different discipline in conjunction with a master of science in nursing (MSN) is expected; consideration will be given to associate degree in nursing (ADN) candidates who agree to complete a BSN or MSN within three years of hire and sign an agreement regarding BSN completion, with the understanding that a BSN must be obtained within the 3-year timeframe to remain in the assistant nurse manager position.
  • Current unencumbered licensure to practice nursing as a registered nurse in the State of Oregon. 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. 
  • ONS/ONCC certification within one year from date of hire. 
  • Minimum of two years of RN Staff Nurse experience.

  • Success in this role will be enhanced by prior experience as a charge RN, staff experience in oncology nursing, and/or a background in medical/surgical nursing, which can help enable effective leadership and informed decision-making in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong organizational and delegation skills will enable effective management of multiple priorities, allowing for efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will foster strong relationships with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records, particularly Epic, will support efficient navigation of clinical systems and focused patient care.
